Can I host a Project ReCon buoy?

Yes, we're looking for vessels to host Project ReCon GPS tracker buoys.

If you can help by hosting a buoy on your vessel, follow these simple steps to get involved:

1️⃣Email projectrecon@tangaroablue.org to apply or find out more.
2️⃣Attend a brief training session.
3️⃣Receive a ReCon buoy and all other materials required to host it.

How does Project ReCon work?

Since 2023, Tangaroa Blue has been working with fishing industry partner, Satlink, to repurpose as many lost GPS buoys (sometimes referred to as tuna trackers) as possible to help track and remove ghost gear (Abandoned, Lost, or Otherwise Discarded Fishing Gear) from the ocean.

When we find a tracker washed up on the beach, we test whether it can still be used. Satlink then reactivate the buoy, and we pass it to one of our Project ReCon host vessels.

When our host vessels come across a large ghost net, they attach the Project ReCon buoy, and we activate its GPS tracking capabilities.

We then continue to track the ghost gear until we have found the right partners and resources to remove it from the ocean.

Why become a Project ReCon host vessel?

Help protect the ocean from dangerous ghost nets.

We need a range of host vessels with buoys on board, so that when they come across a ghost net in the ocean, they are ready to respond by marking it with a Project ReCon buoy.

Then the host's job is done! Tangaroa Blue will take it from there and arrange the necessary logistics to retrieve the ghost net from the marine environment.
