Does Tangaroa Blue Foundation work with the Christmas Island Community?
Yes, Tangaroa Blue works with the Christmas Island community to reduce and prevent marine debris on the island.
Tangaroa Blue Foundation has local staff on Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to help engage the community and equip them with the skills and tools they need to protect their island coastlines from marine debris.
What do you do with the data you collect on Christmas Island?
The data collected by our team and local citizen scientists helps to contribute to a better understanding of marine debris. In January 2026, our paper "Wind speed and direction influence beach plastic accumulation patterns on remote Christmas Island" was published in Marine Pollution Bulletin.
Data collected through regular monitoring at specific sites across Christmas Island advances scientific understanding, informs policy, and drives local source-reduction initiatives, such as the IOT Esky Library Initiative.
Do you take volunteers to Christmas Island to help with the clean-up effort?
Most of our work on Christmas Island is coordinated by our on-island coordinators with the local community. Once a year, we take an experienced group of beach clean-up volunteers to help with community clean-ups and monitoring on the island. Learn more about the IOT Volunteer Voyage.
