How do I estimate the volume of debris I have collected?

Estimating volumes can be difficult, but this rough guide should help!

  • For smaller volumes of debris, try to visualise it inside a 1 or 2 litre milk bottle.

  • For slightly larger volumes, a standard household plastic bucket is approximately 9 litres.

  • A Tangaroa Blue Foundation hessian bag is 56 litres when tied up.

  • An Australian household curb-side wheelie bin is typically 120 litres.

  • A large chemical or oil drum is approximately 200 litres.

  • The volume of a standard single-cab Hilux Ute tray is approximately 4,500 litres.

If you can imagine how much space your debris would take up inside of one of those items (or it is one of those items!), you'll be well on the way to a sensible volume estimate.
