What happens to FADs and GPS buoys once they are retrieved by FAD Watch?

Where possible, FADs and buoys will be diverted from landfill into a circular reuse pathway.

Sustainability is a core principle of both Project ReCon and FAD Watch.

Tangaroa Blue Foundation will coordinate the appropriate handling of all recovered FADs and GPS buoys.

Where possible, buoys will be diverted from landfill into the circular reuse pathway, Project ReCon. Buoys suitable for reuse may be redeployed to track ghost gear through Project ReCon, while damaged or unsuitable units will be responsibly recycled.
