What happens to GPS buoys that are not eligible for Project ReCon?

Our new GPS buoy recycling pathway means even broken buoys are repurposed.

For buoys that are unsuitable for reuse or too damaged, Project ReCon works with Satlink and the plastics industry to identify appropriate recycling solutions.

The program prioritises removing these buoys from the marine environment and diverting them from traditional waste disposal pathways, such as landfill, particularly in remote communities.
