What is a Source Reduction Plan or Initiative?

A strategy or pathway to prevent waste from entering the environment - targeting waste at its source.

Gathering data on what marine debris we find on the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI) Database allows us (and our AMDI partners and local communities) to evaluate what items are common, where they are found and sometimes even where they come from.

This information can then be used to form a Source Reduction Plan or Initiative. These plans or pathways can be implemented at a local scale (e.g. in your town), across a state (e.g. our Ditch the Flick campaign in QLD), nationally (e.g. the Rig Recycle program) or internationally (e.g. Project ReCon).

Source Reduction Plans (or SRPs for short) can be trialled, evaluated, improved and eventually let loose in the real world as a solution to a specific marine debris item. We can see whether the SRP is working in a particular area by comparing AMDI Data before and after SRP implementation.

I want to create my own Source Reduction Plan, where can I start?

If you want to create your own Source Reduction Plan, we’ve created a form that provides a framework for you to work through. We are happy to provide advice where we can and signpost to partners who may be able to help you – get in touch.

Do you have any examples of a Source Reduction Plan?

Yes, we have lots! Check out real-world examples of Source Reduction Plans in action.
