What is the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI)?

Tangaroa Blue Foundation coordinates the Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI), an on-the-ground network of thousands of volunteers, communities, organisations, and agencies across Australia.

The AMDI Network monitors marine debris and its impacts in their local area, contributing citizen science data to the AMDI Database and providing vital evidence to combat the ocean plastic crisis at the regional, national, and international scales.

Anyone can contribute data to AMDI through our free-to-use AMDI app. Download the app on Google Play, the Apple App Store, or you can view our Web App.

Collecting data enables us to:

  • Understand marine debris accumulation patterns over time and space
  • Gather evidence to track marine debris to its source
  • Provide evidence for source reduction initiatives to stop pollution before it reaches our waterways
  • Provide local organisations with specific data that is relevant to their work
  • Provide a state-wide and national overview and influence plastic policies
